What causes this
- Pocket lint compressing into a solid plug at the bottom of the port over months.
- Sand and grit from beach trips working into the connector.
- Cables yanked at an angle, bending the pins or loosening the port from the board.
- Cheap cables with out-of-spec connectors wearing the contacts.
- Corrosion after a phone got wet, even briefly.

- The phone charges wirelessly but not by cable, or vice versa
- The port is visibly packed with debris, or a pin looks bent

Port cleaning and testing
The first thing we do, and often the last. Properly clearing a packed port restores charging on a surprising number of phones.

When the port is worn or damaged, we replace it. On some models it's a flex cable, on others it's soldered — we explain which yours is.
Cable and charger diagnosis
Sometimes the phone is fine and the cable or brick is failing. We test rather than assume.
Corrosion assessment
If the port failed after water exposure, we look at the board too, because corrosion doesn't stay in one place.
What you can safely try
- Shine a bright light into the port and look at the depth — a solid flat surface usually means packed lint.
- Try two different cables and two different power sources before concluding anything.
- Charge from a wall outlet rather than a car or laptop port for the test.
- Blow out loose debris with a dry air puff, never with liquid.
- Note whether the phone got wet in the last month.
When to stop
- Never dig in the port with a paperclip, pin, needle, or knife. This is how ports go from dirty to destroyed.
- Don't use contact cleaner or alcohol into a port on a powered-on phone.
- Don't force a cable that doesn't seat — you'll bend pins.
- Don't ignore a port that got wet. Corrosion spreads inward.

- Bring the cable and charger you normally use.
- Know your passcode so we can test charging and data after the repair.
- Tell us if the phone has ever been in water.
- Mention any prior repairs to the bottom of the phone.
