What you can safely try
- Force restart before assuming the iPad is dead.
- Try a different cable and a wall adapter rated for tablets — many phone bricks charge an iPad far too slowly to tell.
- Check Settings → Battery for usage patterns.
- Look into the port with a flashlight for compacted lint.
- Back up to iCloud or a computer while the iPad still powers on.
When to stop
- Stop charging an iPad with a lifting screen immediately and bring it in. A swollen battery under glass is a safety issue.
- Don't press the screen back down. You'll crack it and possibly puncture the cell.
- Don't dig in the charging port with metal.
- Don't try a home screen kit. iPad glass is thin, wide, and glued directly over the battery.

- Back up to iCloud if you can — iPad repairs involve more disassembly than phone repairs.
- Know your passcode and your Apple ID password.
- Bring the keyboard case or folio if the problem involves the Smart Connector.
