What you can safely try
- Tape over the crack to stop glass shedding, especially if a child uses the iPad.
- Back up to iCloud now, while touch still works.
- Force restart if the screen is black but you hear sounds.
- Check whether the panel sits flush — a raised edge means the battery, not just the glass.
- Note whether the iPad was dropped or found this way.
When to stop
- Stop using an iPad with loose glass — the shards are sharp and the panel degrades further.
- Don't press a lifted display back down; you can puncture the battery underneath.
- Don't buy a glass kit. iPad glass over a glued battery is the least forgiving DIY repair there is.
- Don't keep charging an iPad whose screen is lifting.
